Light travels in straight lines called rays . It moves extremely fast and can pass through empty space, air, and some materials like glass and water . When light travels in the same material (like air), it keeps moving straight.
However, when light enters water from air, it slows down . Because of this change in speed, the light ray bends at the surface where air and water meet. This bending of light is called refraction . Refraction is why a straw in a glass of water looks bent and why swimming pools appear shallower than they really are .
